A new threat, and a very significant one is now facing Israel. The hot dry season of long dry summers particularly from May through to October, with the added dreaded dry ‘sharav’ winds coming in from the Jordanian desert is a perfect mix for catastrophic fires. No one knows this more than the enemies of Israel. Success breeds success, and the major disruption and enormous damage done by the over one hundred fires that raged near Jerusalem recently, will no doubt embolden those who seek the destruction of Israel.
Due to the recent bombing of supply routes and tunnels on Israel’s previously porous borders has made conventional weapons harder to obtain by terrorists in the many cells that lie embedded within the borders of Israel. It is no surprise therefore that arson has become now their weapon of choice. Arson requires little training and surreptitious lighting of small fires that spread rapidly when applied strategically are hard to detect. Fire accelerants are cheap and easy to obtain. In other words, arson is a most strategic weapon indeed. Israel’s technologically advanced Iron Dome poses no threat to their methods, the mighty Merkava battle tank and the mighty F35 jet can do little when the fire rages. Fires and the resultant smoke cause havoc, close highways, and divert resources.
Fires Attract Media Attention
Also, and more importantly, the visual nature of the fire creates much media attention. This plays into the terrorist’s media strategy and amplifies their message and goals. So, sadly we can only expect more of this terror tactic.
One young Aussie Christian, Timothy Wainwright, is acutely aware of this and is using his expertise in firefighting to assist. He and his brother Allan are assisting local communities in Israel in developing strategies for dealing with the ever-increasing threat of arson at their own expense. As well as being well versed in the latest fire control methods, the Wainwrights have studied at length the Indigenous Australian methods of limited controlled fire burns. Although an ancient methodology, it is particularly effective in the protection of vulnerable communities in Israel.
How We Can Help
The Wainwrights in conjunction with local Israeli manufacturers have designed and produced a fireproof jacket essential for personal protection in firefighting.
These cost around $360 each and can have an embroidered patch with the name of the donor sewn on.
