Isaiah 54 is a powerful Messianic prophecy pointing to the ultimate redemption and the coming Messianic Era. Isaiah proclaims God’s everlasting covenant of peace and restoration, calling the once-barren to rejoice. Through promises of abundance, righteousness, and renewal, he reveals the heart of God as a faithful Husband and Redeemer.
These words brought comfort to the Jewish exiles after Babylon’s invasion in 586 BCE and continue to encourage Jewish communities today. For all who trust in the Messiah, this chapter still speaks – reminding us to hold fast in hope as we await Israel’s full restoration and Messiah’s reign.
A JEWELLED CITY
In Isaiah 54:11-12 the Lord promises that in the future he will rebuild Jerusalem with precious stones.
Isaiah 54:11-12 (NKJV)
“O you afflicted one, Tossed with tempest, and not comforted, Behold, I will lay your stones with colourful gems, And lay your foundations with sapphires. I will make your pinnacles of rubies, Your gates of crystal, And all your walls of precious stones.
This verse points to a time when the repentant remnant will embrace the Servant King and come under His atoning sacrifice. In that day, they – together with those already in covenant relationship with Yeshua and the gentiles grafted into Israel – will enter a resurrected state at the dawn of the Messianic Era.
As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:51-53
“Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed – in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruptible, and this mortal must put on immortality.”
Isaiah 54:11-12 paints a stunning vision of a jewelled city – often linked to the New Jerusalem of Revelation 21, where John describes its brilliance in full detail. But why does this image appear in a Messianic prophecy? After all, the New Jerusalem is revealed only after the thousand-year Messianic reign on earth – in the World to Come.
To see the connection, we must first consider what it means to exist in a resurrected state – when those in Messiah are transformed at the dawn of the Messianic Age.
THE RESURRECTED ONES
The first and only one to have lived in a resurrected body is Yeshua Himself. He is the first fruit of the resurrection, and His life after rising from the dead gives us a glimpse of what it will be like for those who follow Him.
To summarise:
- We will rise with incorruptible bodies – glorious, powerful, and spiritual. Our resurrected form will mirror heaven itself, perfectly suited for eternal life in God’s presence, free from all earthly limits – just as Yeshua’s own resurrected body was (1 Corinthians 15:42-49; Philippians 3:20-21).
- We will be free from sin, with the Torah written on our hearts, as promised in Jeremiah 31:33. Revelation 21:27 reminds us that nothing unclean will enter the New Jerusalem – only those made pure and holy through the Messiah will dwell there.
- Some will be granted authority to oversee cities in the coming Kingdom. As 1 Corinthians 6:2 and Matthew 25:23 illustrate, faithfulness and obedience in this life prepares us for greater responsibility in the next. Revelation 2:26 seals the promise—those who overcome will rule with Messiah.
Revelations 2:26 (NKJV)
“And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations”
- We will be able to move across realms or dimensions. We see glimpses of it in Yeshua’s resurrected life. He appeared in one place and then suddenly in another, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
For example, in Luke 24:31, Yeshua vanished from the disciples’ sight. In John 20:19, He entered a locked room without opening the door. And in Acts 1:9, He ascended before their eyes into heaven – literally moving from one dimension to another.
DIMENSIONAL REASONING
The fact that the resurrected righteous will move between realms reveals that these dimensions already exist; they’re simply veiled from our eyes in our mortal state.
“In that day, they—together with those already in covenant relationship with Yeshua and the gentiles grafted into Israel—will enter a resurrected state at the dawn of the Messianic Era.”
So perhaps we can understand the existence of the New Jerusalem present in the Messianic Era another way. It already exists at the time of resurrection and the dawn of Messiah’s reign but remains hidden – veiled from human sight in another dimension. This explains why Isaiah 54 speaks of its precious stones being established – it offers a glimpse into that unseen reality already set in motion.
In Revelations 21:2-3 it says:
Revelations 21:2-3 (NKJV)
“Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.”
In this verse, the New Jerusalem is called the Bride – not simply a city, but the redeemed people of God. Those reborn in Messiah, clothed in righteousness (Revelation 19:7-8), and joined to Him through the New Covenant form its very structure.
In this sense, the city and the people are inseparably connected. The New Jerusalem is a divine structure built of living stones, as described in 1 Peter 2:4-6.
1 Peter 2:4-6 (NKJV)
“Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Therefore, it is also contained in the Scripture,
“Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.””
This passage echoes Isaiah 54:11-12, where Zion’s stones symbolize the restoration of the afflicted city – rebuilt with precious, living stones. Spiritually, this is fulfilled in those reborn in Messiah, the Chief Cornerstone (1 Peter 2:6).
The sapphire foundation in Isaiah 54 points to God’s throne – the unshakable base of His covenantal presence. In Exodus 24:10, when Aaron and the elders met God on Mount Sinai, they saw beneath His feet a sapphire pavement, radiant and pure.
This foundation ultimately foreshadows Yeshua – the divine Cornerstone upon which the New Jerusalem is built. Believers, as “living stones” (1 Peter 2:5), are being fitted together in His likeness, reflecting the brilliance of that heavenly foundation.
In Ephesians 2:19-22 Paul portrays believers – both Jew and Gentile – as the very structure of the New Jerusalem. This will reach its full expression when the Messianic era begins. Yet even now, as Ephesians 2:5-6 declares, those made alive in Messiah are already part of that heavenly city, seated with Him in the heavenly realms.
THE BIG REVEAL
The New Jerusalem isn’t imaginary simply because it exists in another realm during the Messianic Era. Just as we cannot see the highest heaven where God dwells, its reality is hidden from human sight.
The grand unveiling – the Bride in radiant glory – awaits the ‘World to Come’. It will appear after the thousand-year reign, once sin and death are gone and everything converges on Jerusalem, Mount Zion.
At its heart will stand the Holy of Holies – the very centre of God’s throne, the Tree of Life, and His abiding Presence. Picture heaven and earth folding together like a divine concertina – two realms becoming one.
