Independence

This week’s update reflects a nation caught between mourning and celebration. On April 29, sirens marked the start of Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and victims of terror. The following evening’s traditional torch-lighting for Independence Day was canceled due to a massive hill fire, underscoring both grief and disruption. As Israel observes its 77th Independence Day, there is palpable sorrow for those lost on and since October 7, ongoing battles against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in the north, and concern over events in Syria—even as the nation gives thanks for its survival and role as a refuge amid rising global antisemitism.

At the same time, Israel faces intense international scrutiny. The International Court of Justice is hearing arguments from roughly 50 UN member states condemning Israel for severing ties with UNRWA, an agency accused of Hamas infiltration. Meanwhile, allegations of genocide, apartheid, and war crimes are being leveled at Israeli leaders in various UN forums, driven largely by political and ideological opposition to Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.

Amid these pressures, the call is to pray for wisdom for all leaders, an end to hostilities—especially in Gaza—and for the safe return of hostages still held captive.
