Israel stands alone

Welcome to this week’s update from Israel and Christians, where we reflect on significant developments two years after the attack by Hamas and other extremist factions on October 7, 2023.

The Military Struggle Against Radical Extremism

Since the onset of hostilities, it has become increasingly evident that military means alone cannot fully eradicate radical extremism in the region. Despite the formidable might of the US and Israeli militaries, efforts to defeat extremist movements have not succeeded in the short to medium term. Leaders and military capabilities may be struck down, but the movements continue to adapt and survive.

The Flaws in Ceasefire Agreements

Experience has shown that agreements made with extremist factions, whether ceasefires or other forms of truce, often fail to establish genuine peace. Instead, these agreements can inadvertently empower groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, granting them an opportunity to regroup and strengthen.

Global Embeddedness of Extremism

Furthermore, the resources and networks of these extremist groups are deeply embedded worldwide, even within Western democracies. The implications of this reality cannot be overstated, raising concerns about the long-term strategies against such groups.

Israel’s Geopolitical Marginalisation

Israel is facing increasing diplomatic isolation and criticism within institutions like the United Nations. With pressures for unilateral withdrawals and ceasefires, there is a prevailing sense that these actions would significantly jeopardise Israel’s security.

The Threats from Hezbollah and Hamas

Israel finds itself in a precarious situation with threats coming from two main fronts: Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza and the West Bank. Both groups have fortified their positions, transforming Lebanon and Gaza into strongholds of terror.

Recent military engagements have highlighted Israel’s struggle against Hezbollah, where attacks have led to casualties among Israeli soldiers and significant disruption to civilian life. In Gaza, the situation remains urgent, as reports state that Hamas’s control poses an ongoing existential threat to Israel.

The Unresolved Fight Against Iran

The challenge does not stop with local extremist factions. The revolutionary regime in Iran continues to loom as a significant threat, notably with its nuclear aspirations. Israel expresses concerns that international exit strategies may ignore the realities on the ground and the growing radicalisation of Iranian leadership.

A Call for Prayer

In light of these mounting challenges, it’s vital for both Israel and its supporters worldwide to uphold the Jewish people in prayer. We encourage prayers for their leaders and the enemies of the state, asking for a divine recognition that true blessing comes when the Jewish people dwell peacefully in the land serving God.

In closing, let us look to God to fulfil His promises and pray for the peace of Jerusalem and the coming of the Messiah of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. May He protect His people and usher in a kingdom of peace and righteousness for all.

Thank you for joining us in this week’s update. We wish you a blessed weekend and look forward to seeing you next week.
